What does this word unscrambler do?
It turns a jumble of letters into every word they can spell, and sorts them the way a person would: longest first, and the words you actually know before the obscure ones.
- Common words first. Every word carries a frequency level, so sea and ease lead and aal sits at the end, dimmed. Other unscramblers list both alphabetically, side by side.
- Blank tiles. Type
?or*for a blank. The letter it plays is underlined and scores zero. - Uses all your letters. Words that use every letter are highlighted: the Jumble answer, the anagram, the Scrabble bingo.
- Scrabble and Words With Friends points, with the bingo bonus, and a sort by points.
- Spelling Bee mode. Seven letters, a center letter, letters that can repeat, pangrams highlighted and Bee points.
- Filters for Wordle and crosswords. Starts with, ends with, contains, a pattern like
_R_N_, letters to include or exclude, and length. They also work with no letters, across the whole dictionary. - Instant. Results change as you type, with a link to each word's definition.

Which dictionary is behind it?
The core is ENABLE, a public domain list of 172,820 words made for word games, which Words With Friends started from and which matches the North American Scrabble list for the great majority of words. On top of it sit everyday words that are newer than ENABLE, like selfie or blockchain, marked with a dot, and frequency levels that decide what counts as common.
What this word unscrambler does not do
- It does not use the official Scrabble dictionaries, NWL and Collins, because they are proprietary. A few tournament-only words may be missing, and some newer words may not be accepted by your game.
- It does not read your board, so bonus squares and letters already on the board are not counted.
- It does not build multi-word anagrams from a phrase; each result is a single word.
The frequency levels come from wordfreq (CC BY-SA 4.0) and newer words from SCOWL by Kevin Atkinson. To count the words and characters in a text instead, use the word counter.
Frequently asked questions
How does a word unscrambler work?
It checks your letters against a dictionary of about 169,000 words and keeps every word that can be spelled with them, using each tile at most as many times as you have it. Results are grouped by length, longest first, and inside each length the common words come before the rare ones.
How do I use a blank tile?
Type a question mark or an asterisk for each blank, like QU?Z. The blank can stand for any letter. In the results the letter the blank plays is underlined and scores zero, just like in Scrabble and Words With Friends. Up to three blanks work well; more blanks return very long lists.
Which dictionary does this word unscrambler use?
ENABLE, a public domain list of 172,820 words built for word games, which Words With Friends started from, plus newer everyday words such as selfie and blockchain. The official Scrabble lists are proprietary, so a few tournament-only words may be missing, and some words here may not be valid in your game.
Why are some words dimmed?
Dimmed words are rare: valid in word games but hardly used, like aal or qat. They sit at the end of each length so the words you can actually play in a casual game or use in a puzzle come first. Tick Hide rare words to remove them completely.
Can it help with Wordle?
Yes. Open More filters, put the green letters in the pattern with an underscore for each unknown square, like _R_N_, add the yellow letters to Must include and the gray ones to Exclude. You can leave the letters box empty: the filters search the whole dictionary.
Can it solve the NYT Spelling Bee?
Yes. Switch to Spelling Bee, type the seven letters and the center letter. It lists words of four letters or more that use only those letters, repeating them as needed, and always the center one. Pangrams, which use all seven letters, are highlighted, and Bee points are shown for each word.
How are Scrabble and Words With Friends points counted?
Each word shows the sum of its letter values in the game you pick, with blanks worth zero. A word that uses seven tiles gets the bingo bonus, 50 points in Scrabble and 35 in Words With Friends. Board bonuses such as double word squares depend on where you play, so they are not included.
How do I find a word that uses all my letters?
Words that use every letter you typed are highlighted at the top of their group. That is the answer to a Jumble or an anagram puzzle, and the bingo in Scrabble when you type a seven tile rack. If none are highlighted, no single word in the dictionary uses all of the letters.
Can I search without letters, like a crossword pattern?
Yes. Leave the letters empty and use the filters: a pattern such as C_O_S_O_D, starts with, ends with, contains, or a length. The whole dictionary is searched, so it works as a crossword helper and a word finder for any puzzle that gives you a few letters in place.
Does it show what a word means?
Every word in the results is a link to its Wiktionary entry, which opens in a new tab with the definition, pronunciation and origin. That is handy for checking an unfamiliar word before playing it, or for learning new vocabulary while you solve a puzzle.
