Morse Code Translator
This free Morse code translator turns text into dots and dashes and back, with sound, light, vibration and MP3, WAV or PNG downloads. It also decodes Morse from an audio or video file or the microphone, suggests readings for Morse written with no gaps, and decodes what you tap. It also spells your text in the NATO phonetic alphabet.
Morse code
Dots and dashes appear here as you type.
The image draws every letter as dots and dashes with the letter underneath, ready for a bracelet, card, engraving or tattoo stencil.
Decodes live while it listens, up to 3 minutes.
The decoded text and a timeline of every beep appear here.
Works best with one clear beep at a time. Voices or music over the beep, or several stations at once, cause mistakes that the timeline makes easy to spot.
What you tapped
Letters appear here as you tap. Try SOS: three short, three long, three short.
What does this Morse code translator do?
It translates both ways in one box and handles the Morse you actually find in the wild: in a recording, in a video, or written with no gaps.
- One box, both directions. Type text and get dots and dashes; paste Morse and get text. No direction button.
- Any notation. Dots and dashes as
.-,•−, the long dash phones insert, underscores,di-dahsyllables, or 0 and 1. Words split by a slash, a pipe or a wider gap. - Morse with no gaps. When letters run together, the page counts how many ways the signal splits and suggests the most likely English readings.
- Audio and video decoder. Drop an MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG or MP4, or use the microphone. It finds the beep, measures the speed, follows fading, and shows a timeline of every beep with its letter.
- Sound, light, vibration. Play at 5 to 40 WPM with Farnsworth spacing and your own tone, flash a full screen lamp, or vibrate an Android phone.
- Downloads. MP3 and WAV audio, and a PNG or SVG image of the dots and dashes with each letter underneath.
- Tap it. Key Morse with a finger or the space bar and watch it turn into text, at your own rhythm.
- NATO phonetic alphabet. Every text is also spelled out as Alfa, Bravo, Charlie, in the official ICAO spellings, ready to copy for a radio call or a booking code read over the phone.

Timing is what makes it Morse: a dash is three dots long, letters are three dots apart, and words seven. Speed is measured with the word PARIS, exactly 50 of those units.
Why is Morse with no gaps hard to read?
Because the gaps carry information. Without them, bits and three are the same signal, and a phrase like hello world can be split into letters over 600 million ways. The page ranks readings by real English words, which usually puts the right one first, but it is a suggestion, never a certainty.
What this translator does not do
- It does not read Morse from an image. Type the dots and dashes instead.
- It does not separate several stations transmitting at once, or a beep buried under voice or music.
- It does not guarantee a no-gap reading. Names and rare words may not be in its word list.
The word list comes from wordfreq, under CC BY-SA 4.0. To hear any text read aloud by a natural voice instead of beeps, use the text to speech tool.
Frequently asked questions
How do I translate Morse code to English?
Paste the Morse code into the box and the text appears below. It accepts dots and dashes typed any way, including •, −, the long dash phones insert, underscores, di-dah syllables and 0 and 1. Letters are separated by a space and words by a slash or a wider gap.
Can I decode Morse code from an audio file or a video?
Yes. Open Decode audio and drop an MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG or a video such as MP4, or use the microphone. The decoder finds the beep by itself, measures the speed from the signal and shows a timeline of every beep with its letter underneath, so a mistake is easy to spot.
How do I decode Morse code without spaces between letters?
Paste it as one run of dots and dashes. Without gaps the same signals can spell many things, since bits and three are identical in Morse, so the page counts the possible splits and lists the most likely English readings. Put a space between letters for a certain answer.
What does ...---... mean in Morse code?
It is SOS, the international distress signal: three dots, three dashes, three dots. Sent properly it has no gaps between the letters, as one continuous signal, which is why this page reads ...---... as SOS. SOS was chosen because it is easy to send and recognize, not because it stands for any words.
How do you say I love you in Morse code?
I love you is .. / .-.. --- ...- . / -.-- --- ..- with a slash between words. Type it in the box to hear it, flash it or download it. The PNG and SVG image draws each letter as dots and dashes with the letter underneath, which works for a bracelet, card, engraving or tattoo stencil.
What do WPM and Farnsworth spacing mean?
WPM, words per minute, is measured with the word PARIS, which is exactly 50 time units long, so a dot at 20 WPM lasts 60 milliseconds. Farnsworth spacing keeps each letter fast but stretches the gaps between letters and words, which helps learners hear letters as sounds instead of counting dots.
Can I send Morse code with a flashlight or vibration?
Yes. Flash light opens a full screen lamp that blinks your message and repeats it until you exit, so the phone can signal at night with the brightness turned up. Vibrate plays the message as vibrations on Android phones. iPhone browsers do not allow websites to vibrate, so that button does not appear there.
How do I tap Morse code and turn it into text?
Open Tap it and press the key, or hold the space bar: a short press is a dot and a long press is a dash. Pause briefly between letters and longer between words. The decoder adapts to your rhythm as you tap, shows each letter with its code and estimates your speed.
Does Morse code have accents, numbers and punctuation?
Yes. The international standard covers A to Z, 0 to 9, common punctuation, the @ sign and É. Letters such as Ñ, Ç, Ä, Ö and Ü use codes that are widely used but outside the standard. Other accented letters are sent as the plain letter, and the page tells you when that happens.
How do I spell my text in the NATO phonetic alphabet?
Type or decode the text and the NATO spelling appears under the Morse, ready to copy: SOS becomes Sierra Oscar Sierra, with a slash between words. It uses the official ICAO spellings, Alfa and Juliett, reads digits as words, and drops accents so the letter is still spelled clearly over a radio or phone.
