The two big numbers, words and characters, are what most people come for. The smaller stats matter when you are shaping a piece to fit a specific limit, page target, or pace.

Why do word and character counts matter?

Different tasks care about different units. A school essay is measured in words. A tweet, an SMS, or a meta description is measured in characters. A freelance writer is often paid by the word. Knowing the exact number keeps you inside the limit without guessing or pasting into a bigger app just to check.

How is each number counted?

The rules match what word processors do, so the totals line up with Word or Google Docs:

• Words: any run of characters separated by spaces, tabs, or line breaks. Repeated spaces count once.
• Characters with spaces: every character, spaces and line breaks included.
• Characters without spaces: the same text with all whitespace removed.
• Sentences: segments ending in a period, question mark, or exclamation point.
• Paragraphs: blocks of text separated by one or more line breaks.

How many pages is my word count?

Pages are an estimate, because spacing and font change everything. This tool uses about 500 words per page at 12-point double spacing, the common academic standard, so 1,000 words is roughly two pages. Single-spaced, a page holds closer to 1,000 words, so the same text is about one page. Use the number as a target, not a guarantee.

What do keyword density and readability tell you?

Keyword density lists your five most-used content words with a count and a percentage of the total, skipping filler words like "the" and "and". It shows what your text is really about and flags a word you have leaned on too hard.

Readability gives a grade level and a 0 to 100 reading-ease score using the Flesch-Kincaid method. Aim for grade 7 to 9 for a general audience. Shorter sentences and shorter words raise the score and make the writing easier to read.

How do reading and speaking time work?

Reading time assumes an average silent reading speed of 238 words per minute, from a large 2019 review of reading research. Speaking time uses 140 words per minute, a comfortable presenting pace. Both are estimates: dense text reads slower and a lively delivery speaks faster, so treat the times as a guide.
