Number to Words Converter

This free converter writes any number in English words, up to 66 digits, and shows every style at once: American, British with "and", check format with cents over 100, dollars and cents, ordinal, year, and lakh and crore. Type words instead and it gives the number back, flagging common misspellings like fourty.

Type a number to see it in words, or type words to get the number back.

What does this number to words converter do?

It writes a number in English words in every style you might need, side by side, and explains the rule behind each one. Most converters make you pick one style from a menu; here you see them all and copy the one that fits.

  • Check format. Dollars in words and cents over 100: One thousand two hundred fifty and 50/100 dollars.
  • American and British English. With and without the British "and".
  • Ordinals, years and large-number systems. Twenty-first, nineteen eighty-four, lakh and crore, and the old long scale.
  • Both directions. Type words and you get the digits back, with common misspellings pointed out.
  • Lists. Paste one number per line and convert them all at once, then copy or download.

How do you write numbers in words?

Four rules cover almost everything:

RuleRightWrong
Hyphenate 21 to 99, nothing elseforty-two, two hundredfortytwo, two-hundred
No plural on scale wordsthree thousandthree thousands
British "and" before the last tens and unitsone hundred and five(American: one hundred five)
Forty drops the u of fourforty, fourteenfourty

On a US check, the cents always go as a fraction of 100, even when there are none (00/100), and a line is drawn from the end of the words to the end of the box. Banks such as Chase and Capital One give the same advice in their guides on writing a check.

How do I use it?

  1. Type a number, with or without commas, a dollar sign or decimals.
  2. Read down the styles and press Copy on the one you need.
  3. To go the other way, type the number in words.
  4. For many numbers, put one per line and choose the style for the whole list.

What makes this one different?

  • Every style at once, each with the rule that explains it, so you also learn why it is written that way.
  • Exact for very long numbers. Digits are read as text, not as a computer number, so a 66-digit number or a long decimal is never rounded.
  • Words back to numbers. It reads hyphens or no hyphens, "and" or no "and", ordinals like twenty-first, decimals like three point one four, years like nineteen eighty-four, and digits mixed with words: 5 million is 5,000,000 and 1.5 billion is 1,500,000,000.
  • Spelling help. Type fourty-two and you get 42 plus a note that the word is forty-two.

What this converter does not do

  • It writes English only. Other languages have their own rules for gender and joining words, and a quick table would get them wrong.
  • It does not print or create checks. It gives you the wording for the amount line; the check itself comes from your bank.
  • It reads US and Indian digit grouping. A European number such as 12,5 or 1.000.000 is not guessed: the tool asks, and one click turns it into 12.5 or 1000000.
  • It does not read handwriting or photos. Type or paste the number.

Everything runs in your browser, so the numbers you type stay on your device. To count the words of a longer text, use the word counter.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write a check amount in words?

Write the dollars in words, add "and", then the cents as a fraction of 100: $1,250.50 becomes One thousand two hundred fifty and 50/100. Write 00/100 when there are no cents, start at the far left of the line, and draw a line to the end so nothing can be added.

Do you hyphenate numbers written in words?

Yes, but only the compound numbers from twenty-one to ninety-nine, such as forty-two and sixty-seven. Nothing else takes a hyphen: it is two hundred, not two-hundred, and three thousand, not three-thousand. This rule is the same in American and British English and in the Chicago Manual of Style.

Is it one hundred five or one hundred and five?

Both are correct, in different countries. British English puts "and" before the last tens and units, so 105 is one hundred and five and 1,005 is one thousand and five. American English usually leaves it out. On a US check, "and" is kept for the cents, which avoids confusion.

Is it forty or fourty?

Forty. Four keeps its u in fourteen, but forty drops it, and fourty is one of the most common spelling mistakes in written numbers. Type fourty-two into the converter and it returns 42 with a note that the correct spelling is forty-two. Ninety, ninth and twelfth are the other frequent traps.

How do I convert words back to a number?

Type the words instead of digits and the converter switches direction on its own: one thousand two hundred fifty becomes 1250, with or without hyphens and with or without "and". It also reads ordinals like twenty-first, decimals like three point one four, years like nineteen eighty-four, and mixes like 5 million or 1.5 billion.

How do you write ordinal numbers in words?

Only the last word changes. One, two and three become first, second and third, five becomes fifth, eight becomes eighth, nine becomes ninth and twelve becomes twelfth. Words ending in y switch to ieth, so forty becomes fortieth, and every other word adds th, as in one hundred twenty-fourth.

How do you say years in words?

Years are usually read in pairs of digits: 1984 is nineteen eighty-four and 2024 is twenty twenty-four. A zero in the middle is read as "oh", so 1905 is nineteen oh-five. The years 2000 to 2009 are the exception, normally said as two thousand five, and round centuries become nineteen hundred.

What are lakh and crore?

They are the large-number names of the Indian numbering system. One lakh is 100,000, written 1,00,000, and one crore is 10 million, written 1,00,00,000. After the first thousand, digits are grouped in twos, so 12,34,56,789 reads twelve crore thirty-four lakh fifty-six thousand seven hundred eighty-nine.

Is a billion a thousand million or a million million?

Today, in both American and British English, a billion is a thousand million, 10 to the 9th. That is the short scale. Older British texts and several European languages use the long scale, where a billion is a million million. The converter shows the long-scale wording separately for numbers that big.

How large a number can it write?

Up to 66 digits, which reaches the vigintillions, 10 to the 63rd, the largest number with a standard English name used here. The digits are read as text rather than as a computer number, so even very long numbers and decimals come out exact, with no rounding.
