Lorem Ipsum Generator
This free Lorem Ipsum generator creates placeholder text for mockups and layouts, right in your browser. Pick paragraphs, sentences, words, characters, or list items, then take it as plain text or as ready-to-paste HTML with proper tags. Copy it or download it, with nothing sent to a server.
What does this Lorem Ipsum generator do?
It produces placeholder text in the shape you actually need. This free generator from ÆON Toolhub gives you paragraphs, sentences, words, a specific number of characters, or list items, and hands it back either as plain text or as ready-to-paste HTML with the tags already in place.
That last part is the bit most generators skip. If you are filling a template, getting <p> and <ul><li> already wrapped saves you the tedious pass of adding markup by hand.
How do you use it?
Set the amount and unit. Type a number and pick paragraphs, sentences, words, characters, or list items.
Choose the output. Plain text for design tools, HTML for code. In paragraph mode you can also add <h2> headings between blocks, which makes a mockup look like a real article.
Generate. Press it again for a different draw with the same settings.
Copy or download. One click to the clipboard, or save it as .txt or .html.
The counter under the buttons shows how many words and characters you ended up with, which is handy when you are filling a field with a real limit.
Where does Lorem Ipsum actually come from?
It is scrambled Latin from De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum ("On the Ends of Good and Evil"), written by Cicero in 45 BC. The familiar opening is a mangled fragment of a passage about why pleasure is pursued and pain avoided. Centuries of typesetters copying and cutting it left text that looks like Latin and means nothing, which is exactly what makes it useful.
What is documented is that it became the printing industry's standard specimen text, and that its modern popularity comes from the 1960s, when Letraset sold sheets of dry-transfer lettering with Lorem Ipsum passages, and later from desktop publishing software shipping it as sample text.
What is not documented, despite being repeated everywhere, is a precise origin story for who first scrambled it. Treat that part as folklore.
Why use Latin instead of real words?
Because readable text hijacks the review. Put meaningful English in a mockup and people read it: they comment on the copy, argue about the wording, and stop looking at the thing you actually wanted feedback on, which is the layout.
Latin-looking text has roughly the same letter distribution, word length, and visual rhythm as English, so the block of text looks right on the page while giving the eye nothing to read. It is a deliberate trick, not laziness.
Which unit should you pick?
| Unit | Good for |
|---|---|
| Paragraphs | Article layouts, blog templates, long-form pages |
| Sentences | Card descriptions, intros, tooltips |
| Words | Headlines, labels, short strings |
| Characters | Fields with a hard limit, meta descriptions, bios |
| List items | Navigation, feature lists, bullet blocks |
If you are filling a field with a strict limit, the Characters unit plus our word counter covers the whole job: generate to the exact size, then verify the count against the real content later.
Is it safe to leave placeholder text in a live site?
No, and it happens constantly. Lorem Ipsum leaks into production on real company sites more often than anyone would like to admit. It looks unprofessional to a visitor, and to a search engine the page simply has no real content, which is the opposite of what you want.
Search your project for "lorem" before you ship. Some teams go further and deliberately use an obviously wrong placeholder, precisely so nobody can miss it in review.
Your work stays private
The generator is fully client-side. The text is produced in your browser, nothing is uploaded, logged, or stored, and it clears when you close the tab. It also keeps working offline once the page has loaded.
Frequently asked questions
What is Lorem Ipsum?
Lorem Ipsum is scrambled, meaningless Latin-like text used as a placeholder in design and publishing. It lets you fill a layout with realistic-looking text before the real content exists, so you can judge spacing, fonts, and flow without being distracted by the actual words. It has been the industry standard since the 1500s.
Why use placeholder text instead of real words?
Real copy pulls your eye into reading and judging the message, when you are really trying to evaluate the design. Placeholder text looks like natural language but means nothing, so your attention stays on layout, typography, and balance. It also fills space realistically when the final content is not written yet.
Can I choose how much text to generate?
Yes. Pick your unit, paragraphs, sentences, or words, and set the amount. Generate a single word or dozens of paragraphs, whatever your mockup needs. You can also start with the classic 'Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet' opening, or begin with random words for more variety.
Is this tool free and private?
Yes to both. The generator is completely free, with no signup, and it runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded or stored, and the text clears when you close the tab. It also keeps working offline once the page has loaded, so you can generate placeholder text anywhere.
Can it generate Lorem Ipsum as HTML?
Yes. Switch the output to HTML and the text comes back already wrapped in tags: paragraphs in p elements, list items inside a ul, and optional h2 headings between paragraphs. You paste it straight into a template instead of adding the markup by hand afterwards.
Can I generate a specific number of characters?
Yes. Pick the Characters unit and set the count, up to 5000. The text is cut at a word boundary so it never ends mid-word, which means the result lands at or just under your target. The live counter under the buttons shows the exact length you got.
Where does the Lorem Ipsum text come from?
It is scrambled Latin from a philosophy text by Cicero written in 45 BC, De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum. The familiar opening comes from a passage about pleasure and pain, mangled over centuries of typesetting, which is why it reads like Latin but means nothing.
Why use Latin instead of English?
Because readable text hijacks the review. If the placeholder says something meaningful, people read it and comment on the words instead of the layout. Latin-looking text has roughly the same letter distribution and rhythm as English, so the page looks right without anyone being tempted to proofread it.
How many words are in a paragraph?
In this generator, each paragraph has three to six sentences and each sentence has six to fourteen words, so a paragraph lands around 30 to 70 words. The length varies on purpose, because paragraphs of identical length make a mockup look artificial and hide real layout problems.
Is it safe to leave Lorem Ipsum in a live site?
No. It regularly leaks into production and looks unprofessional, and search engines see a page with no real content. Use it only while designing, and search your project for "lorem" before you ship. Some teams deliberately use an ugly placeholder so it cannot be missed.
