What does this Lorem Ipsum generator do?

It produces placeholder text in the shape you actually need. This free generator from ÆON Toolhub gives you paragraphs, sentences, words, a specific number of characters, or list items, and hands it back either as plain text or as ready-to-paste HTML with the tags already in place.

That last part is the bit most generators skip. If you are filling a template, getting <p> and <ul><li> already wrapped saves you the tedious pass of adding markup by hand.

How do you use it?

Set the amount and unit. Type a number and pick paragraphs, sentences, words, characters, or list items.

Choose the output. Plain text for design tools, HTML for code. In paragraph mode you can also add <h2> headings between blocks, which makes a mockup look like a real article.

Where does Lorem Ipsum actually come from?

It is scrambled Latin from De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum ("On the Ends of Good and Evil"), written by Cicero in 45 BC. The familiar opening is a mangled fragment of a passage about why pleasure is pursued and pain avoided. Centuries of typesetters copying and cutting it left text that looks like Latin and means nothing, which is exactly what makes it useful.

What is documented is that it became the printing industry's standard specimen text, and that its modern popularity comes from the 1960s, when Letraset sold sheets of dry-transfer lettering with Lorem Ipsum passages, and later from desktop publishing software shipping it as sample text.

What is not documented, despite being repeated everywhere, is a precise origin story for who first scrambled it. Treat that part as folklore.

Why use Latin instead of real words?

Because readable text hijacks the review. Put meaningful English in a mockup and people read it: they comment on the copy, argue about the wording, and stop looking at the thing you actually wanted feedback on, which is the layout.

Latin-looking text has roughly the same letter distribution, word length, and visual rhythm as English, so the block of text looks right on the page while giving the eye nothing to read. It is a deliberate trick, not laziness.

Which unit should you pick?

Is it safe to leave placeholder text in a live site?

No, and it happens constantly. Lorem Ipsum leaks into production on real company sites more often than anyone would like to admit. It looks unprofessional to a visitor, and to a search engine the page simply has no real content, which is the opposite of what you want.

Search your project for "lorem" before you ship. Some teams go further and deliberately use an obviously wrong placeholder, precisely so nobody can miss it in review.

Your work stays private

The generator is fully client-side. The text is produced in your browser, nothing is uploaded, logged, or stored, and it clears when you close the tab. It also keeps working offline once the page has loaded.
